What A Loser!

Hello! My name is Jack, allow me to keep my last name secret, because I hate to make up another one to lie to you. So call me Jack The Loser, because that’s what I am. First of all, my sincere apology for not being able to launch this website in a more entertaining and accommodating way. I know some of you folks have been hanging around here for quite a long time, and that you all expected Loser Society to be something better, much better! And I’m really sorry for failing to meet that expectation.

That pretty much summed up the story of my life, nothing have been done the way they were planned out. When I was born, you know, mom and pop kind of expected me to change the world (I guess that’s not uncommon for the nobody-type parents). And you know what, I grew up promising myself to make a huge difference in the world so that my old folks could be proud of themselves. Well, that promise eventually turned into a mere wish near the end of my high school years, and by the time I hit college, it all became a silly memory. You know why? Because whatever I ever tried, it never ever escapes the level of mediocre!

OK, here’s more detail. When I was little, I wanted to be a medical doctor, a good one, the kind of doctors that can save many people from sickness and death. That sounds normal, even nice. And it shouldn’t be out of reach because everyone told me that if I tried hard enough, I would get what I want. Even my teachers convinced me that I sure beat the average students to get to a medical school. When I got mature enough to realize that life is nothing like fairy tales, I started to lose that sense of nobility I had always believed in. As a pre-med student in college, I started to see the practical side of medical profession: it’s not all about helping others. Like every other career fields, politics always rule. No, the end is actually MONEY, politics is just the means. Everyone around me, including myself by that time, actually deceived themselves into believing that they were working hard for a good cause. What cause? Helping the patients, especially the needy ones? No, not really, it’s the big DOLLAR SIGN that we always carried with us into the classroom.

Am I too pessimistic or sarcastic? Perhaps, but think about it… while we all complain about shortage of physicians, why do medical schools make it real hard to get in? No, I’m not talking about MCAT scores or GPA, but about all those stupid criteria such as volunteering in the community, participating in organizations, etc. Why don’t they just give more students a chance to “try it out,” and if they don’t perform up to the schools’ standard, kick them out? Well, I guess it would hurt the schools’ reputation and/or whatever they consider “quality.” Isn’t that part of politics? Now, my question is how a normal physician can help sick people around the world regardless of compensation? Nonsense! A physician can’t help anyone. I say that again, a physician can’t actually help anyone who needs help, because of all the rules and regulations in the society. Why do you think medical services are so expensive nowadays (in the United States), while we don’t even have that many doctors or nurses to pay to (due to shortages I mentioned above)? Simple, mostly because the doctors get too much pay. Don’t get me wrong, I never blame them. They all need to find a quick way to pay back their huge student loans and buy a luxury car they are expected to drive, and a house that just gets out of reach for most other non-physician people. It’s the system, silly! So if you’re a physician working for a hospital, are you willing to treat your patients free of charge? No, it’s not your authority to do so, the hospital needs money to operate. Now suppose you open your own office, are you willing to give free services? I guess not, because what about the rents and paychecks to your employees? Finally, if your neighbor suffers from some kind of illness, can you go ahead and diagnose and give out medicines? Well, how about professional liability? What if your neighbor later dies because of your help? Your career may just be over.

So then I realized that “being a doctor to help people” is nothing more than “being a financial advisor to help clients,” so I got into finance, giving up all of my hard-earned pre-med credits. Now you see how big a loser I am? Instead of having a secure job with six-figure income, I’ve been running around and finally got laid off in this economic downturn, what a joker I am!

This website, LoserSociety.com, pretty much reflects that aspect of my life: started out as a great idea, then finally failed to meet any standard. Recently I tried to develop it into a social networking place for the losers to have more options to fool around with, yet sophisticated application requires sophisticated hosting package, which requires “sophisticated” cost that I can’t afford right now. So I thought, what the heck, just stick with the free WordPress blog for now. You know, if you can’t save the world, at least you don’t have to kill yourself.

Well, that’s all I wanted to say. I hope you forgive me for being a loser, and will be happy to go with this blog.
